1938. W/op a.g. in 99 Sqdn. Heyford K6897.Cross Country Mildenhall to Hendon and Return. Having finished my radio work, climbed into mid-upper turret, clipped the "dog chain cable", stood on the "firesteps", checked the camera gun, and cocked the 16 shot film ready to take pictures of "attacking" aircraft. (these were open cockpit bombers, fitted with Scarff mountings.) If a picture of an "attacking" plane was taken, the results would be assessed from the negative after processing. After looking all around, seeing nothing, a Gloster Gauntlet or Gladiator came from underneath, followed quickly by another. I was 21 years old, standing with my legs wide apart on the firesteps, being "shot" at from underneath. My imagination worked quickly, and when we landed, I immediately started the action to "remuster" to W.E.M.. I was not one of the heroes, but I'm alive to write this. Ken Cooper.
