Having joined the Royal Navy as a cook, my uncle, Derek Hilson was soon moved to RADAR Ops. It isn't clear whether this was a reflection on his cooking.
He served on an aircraft carrier in the Far East and was often the target of Kamikaze pilots.
His heroic service was mainly remembered by his two sisters, Marg and Audrey (my Monther) for quite different reasons though...
He used to send food parcels home containing tinned fruit and much sought-after Stockings!
Derek died aged 83 on 18th October 2003. The fondly remembered food parcels were mentioned during his funeral service last Tuesday (28th October).
