Born in N Yorkshire in 1931,father a serving member of The Green Howards. Lived in quarters in Richmond, N. Yorks until winter of 1933/34 when we sailed in troopship to India - 3 weeks? via Suez Canal, I think. First Station was Poona, we then moved to Meerut where I have my earliest memories. Recall starting school, playing football, swimming in the Unit pool, the heavy rains and stealing fruit in the local market!
We returned to the UK in 1938 (Troopship - New Railia?) and lived in Scarborough, at that time my father was a Reservist, he rejoined the Army (2nd Bn E.Yorks) in 1939. On the death of my mother in 1940, myself, elder sister and younger brother were sent to live with Grand parents in London - this was in late Summer.
It was somewhat ironic that having survived the Blitz we were packed off as evacuees in May 1941 to a place called Broadway Nr Weymouth. We remained here for about 3 1/2 years, mostly billeted with a family called Critchell in Springfield Rd - there were 12 of us! I well remember attending some exam when I was about 11 - not only was I very late but dressed as I was in WRVS clothing was not a pretty sight. Needless to say I failed that exam and finished up at the Central School, Westham in Weymouth. This was a four mile daily trip so often played hookey.Became a sports monitor - very proud but sacked after borrowing someones bicycle without his permission!
