I have several Chapters of my recollection of the war, but it starts like this:-
I was a student at South West Essex Technical College and School of Art. We had been anticipating Evacuation and had a suitcase of clothes at school, ready for leaving. So each morning saying goodbye without being sure of returning.
All around the school was a large array of Barrage Balloons, but on our playground was an R A F unit but the balloon was still in its bag. Being a nosy (enquiring mind) lad I went down to the and asked them why our balloon was not up. I was told that only if war started would they put the balloon up.
On September the first when I went out at playtime they were unrolling the balloon and I realised that literally the Balloon had gone up. I suppose that made me one of the earliest civillians to know the war had started.
I rushed back to discover mayhem as the classes were being assembled, we went down the front onto buses and were off, we kneww not where or whether we wouldsee our parents again.
