My father, Ernest Potts, joined the RAF in 1941, I think, as soon as he was old enough. He trained as a navigator and flew in a Bristol Beaufighter.
I think he flew in bombing raids with specific targets.
He was shot down twice and was rescued the first time from 'The Drink'(he is in one of the photographs in Paul Brickhill's book "Down in the drink").
The second time he was shot down over Italy. His parents, my grandma and grandad received a telegram saying he was "missing".
Then I think it was months later that they received one from him saying he was home. He had got back with the help of the Italian underground.
He always had a soft spot for Italy, as I remember, and he loved and cherished his family.
When he died my mum received a letter from an old friend of his who said that the years they had after the war were a blessing and a real bonus. I know my dad lost friends during his service in the war and that life was very precious to him.
