This story was submitted to the People's War site by Jenny Christian of the 2nd Air Division Memorial Library on behalf of Margaret Gaffer and has been added to the site with her permission. The author fully understands the site's terms and conditions.

Margaret Gaffer (now Margaret Motts) went to School in Angel Road, Norwich. The School received a consignment of toys and other items in December 1943 from The British War Relief Society, Inc of The United States of America.

The dispatch to Angel Road School came from The Mayor, Citizens and Children of Boston, Massachusetts and according to the accompanying card said "Wishing our brave young friends in Britain a Happy Christmas".

The Headmistress, Miss Shave offered Margaret first choice from the items because the house where she lived with her family in Eade Road had been very badly damaged by a bomb. Margaret chose a sewing box.

Miss Shave asked Margaret to write and say thank you on behalf of all the children at the School. In response to this letter, Margaret received the following, dated March 3rd 1943 from The White House and signed by Eleanor Roosevelt.

"It was very thoughtful of you to write to me and I am so glad to know that you have received something from our country which will be of use to you. I hope, with you, that the war will soon be won and that you people who have suffered so much will be able to re-establish your home and be safe and happy once more".
