I was a local lad, born in Cockfield, and was conscripted into the Suffolks on the 15th February 1940. I was trained at Gibraltar Barracks and in Scotland.

On D-Day I landed on Sword beach with B-Coy. My main memories are of the later fighting at the Chateau de la Londe from the 28th June. We had been driven back in the morning. In the night you could hear the wounded crying out. We rescued as many as possible. At first light, I was in charge of a Bren gun with my pals. One was killed. We went forward, but a shell came over. We were blown into a ditch. My friend was on top of me, but I couldn鈥檛 move him. He was dead.

The Chateaux had turned out to be a major HG. A-Coy were held up and lost many men.
I was wounded in the leg, and got flown back to Britain. We landed in Swindon, but it was full, so we were sent by train to Newport in Wales.

I must say it wasn鈥檛 the life for me.
