I was a Land Girl during the war. I can remember when I first joined up, I was asked at interview if I was afraid of cows — apparently they needed milkmaids.

I was sent to Thetford Hall where I learnt to milk a cow and put a horse’s collar on.

In between milking I did various other tasks like rolling the fleece when shearing was done.

After a month’s training I was sent to Hadleigh to work in a dairy at the top of Station Road. It meant long hours of work, 7 days a week, with one weekend off in three.

I was up early milking and in harvest time we worked particularly late.

I remember I also used to drive cows from the top of Station Road, right down through the High Street, through Bridge Street to the pound.
