My earliest memory is 鈥淒oodle-Bugs鈥 droning over our house at Woodbridge, the siren blaring out50ft away, and going down to the scullery basement.

My father died the same year I was born, 1943. A regular naval officer his ship was sunk by mines, leaving mother a war widow with two children, and a teenage daughter to support.

Times were hard; mother took at least three part time jobs to provide home comforts.

In 1945 my sister met an American GI when working at Debach aerodrome, and although only 18 years old, was married and sailed to the USA for a new life. Gwen was married to Max for over fifty years.

The family missed her, and sad times followed, but I remember happy days in childhood; Americans from Bentwaters throwing parties or local children, warm summers, snowy winters, and a new step-father a veteran of the Suffolk Regiment and local Home Guard on the Second World War.
