I was in the army cadets when war started in 1939. When I was told, I would be a messenger, from Lother Road school to Bourn Park Bridge. There was two pill boxes at the junctions.
I worked for S.Sacker who were on the mount, three of us had to do Fire Watching, three nights a week. We used to watch the RAF shooting at the German planes, called 鈥淒og Fights鈥.
We were all issued with a large air raid shelter. Every body had to dig great holes in the back gardens. I lived in Curriers Lane and across the road was a big girls school. Within six months the ARP took over this school.
All of s kids were casualties, and the ARP used to bandage and splint our bodies up. It was great fun.
We used to watch the enemy planes getting caught up in the search lights, and the big guns firing at them. This used to start early night and go on till three or four in the morning.
