On the morning of the 4th October 1940, a lone German bomber dropped a 鈥渟tring鈥 of bombs across the town of Rushden.
The Wheeler family were very much involved and also very fortunate. Reg Wheeler was in Geoff Morgan鈥檚 shop in Church Street when a bomb embedded itself at the foot of the stairs and did not explode.
Jean Wheeler was in Alfred Street School which was hit and several children killed; and mother, Doris Wheeler, was in the family home 鈥淪tonehurst鈥 which was bombed and badly damaged and mother was unhurt.
Hence all three family members were very close to German bombs that day and fortunately all were safe.
