My wife Audrey and I had been together in London on leave. That evening I got on the train back to my airtbase in Bristol and she went back to Andover. When she got there ,she went to get a taxi back to her base and there was only one.The driver said "you'll have to share because I've got an American officer in the back already"

She looked inside the cab and saw Clark Gable sitting there.It was just after his wife Carol Lmbard had been killed and he had joine up with the US Air force. Well she shared the cab with him -who wouldn't.

She said he was very pleasant but told me he must wear alot of makeup in the films because his skin looked like orange peel! he was quite a gent though he never paid her taxi fare--only his own.
