This Story is submitted by a volunteer on behalf of Radio Bristol Action Desk at City of Bristol College.
Marie Bullock recounts the moving story of her mother during the war.
At the age of just 16, my mother was married and had me. My father, William John Andrews, was a chief petty officer in the Navy, serving on Submarine Triad.
He obviously came on leave at least once because by the time my mother was 18 she was sadly a widow with 2 young children after the submarine that my father was serving on was lost in the mediterranean.
My mother's family was very supportive but unfortunatly, as I never really knew my father, we lost touch with his side of the family and would certainly be interested to hear from them.
My mother did a lot of work organising dances and events on the flying fox and although her name was Joyce Beech she may be remembered as Bobbie Brookes!
More recently, my husband and I were on a cruise which travelled directly over the co-ordinates where the submarine is believed to have gone down. We were able to honour his memory by casting flowers over that spot in the sea. It was very moving and was quite a release for me.
We believe that it was a depth charge which caused the demise of the sub but further information from any source would be greatly received.
