I was a pupil at old Duston COE school in Northamptonshire and as pupils the older pupils went potato picking. I must have been around 12 in 1944 I think!

We went potato picking for a farmer just off the Weedon road but I can鈥檛 remember the farmers name. As far as I was concerned it was fun but talking to a friend of mine she seemed to think it was an official thing to do. If you were capable you had to do it, because there weren鈥檛 enough staff about the children were brought in to help pick else the potatoes would have gone rotten.

I think we only worked for a few days and it was fun. It was during schools hours and although I loved school it was different and something else to do.
