The Miraculous Escape
During the war, granddad, though long passed retiring age, was doing his bit, flre watching throughout the night at a nearby factory.
His duties wore to extinguish any incendiary bombs using a stirrup pump, buckets of sand and a long-handled shovel, for which he was paid a tiny amount. On two occasions he saved the buildings from being burned down.
When the bombing raids became less frequent and were replaced by the pilotless V 1 doodlebugs, he saw little point in waiting for non-existent firebombs, so he would nip home to bed when the staff went home and reappear in the morning before they arrived.
One night there was a terrific explosion and granddad quickly dressed and hurried up the road to investigate, only to find his factory flattened by a V.1, with fire and rescue crews digging in the rubble looking for the fire watcher! To avoid embarrassing explanations he quickly covered himself with dirt and emerged from the ruins and a miracle was born, but it was no less a miracle to those of us who knew the truth!
