"Dad was too old for the regular forces but volunteered for the home guard. I remember him sniggering at 鈥淒ad鈥檚 Army鈥� as he recognised the character of Private Pike as being similar to someone in his unit. In 1942 the request went out for people with previous naval experience. Dad had been in the Merchant Navy with Cable & Wireless laying cables round the Atlantic so he volunteered. He was immediately given the rank of Lieutenant Commander, Royal Navy Reserve. He was posted to Devonport where he met Mum. Mum was a Seaman Torpedomen organising the pistols for Depth Charges. They met on a blind date in the Devonport Officer鈥檚 Mess and married shortly after.
Amongst things Dad ended up on the Malta Convoys and his only war injury occurred when he fell down the engine stairwell whilst drunk. He spent time in a hospital on Malta, most of it under his bed due to the bombing!"
