It was 1945 and I was stationed at New Barracks, Lincoln I had reached the dizzy heights of L/Cpl and had been training recruits for two years, every intake of 10 weeks had exercises at the end of the course in the final 3 weeks where we would go out on forced marches, camp out and do mess-tin cooking etc. with rations provided by the cookhouse or feed off the land.
The rations were the same every time and we were fed-up with the same old fare!In an adjacent field at the bottom of the New Camp there was a large field cropped with peas, a fellow lance jack whose name I can't recall decided we would raid the fiied after lights out to supplement our rations for the following day when we would be on 'Nettleton Nip' a 3 day exercise.
The 'Last Post' sounded and we blackened our faces and went to the field, stuffed our battledress blouses with peas and were just about to return to Nissen Hut 28 when a voice shouted 'Whose there' It was the fire piquet who patrolled the grounds at intervals during the night.
We panicked scattering the peas as we dashed for the road and managed to enter the barracks by another route.
Relieved we retired to our bunks. The following morning when rations were issued we had the suprise of our lives when fresh peas were included, they went down very well with the rest of meal!
