My Grandad was only young when the war started but he has a few memories of it.
He can remember going into the Anderson shelter at the bottom of the garden when the air raid siren went off and returning into the house when the all clear siren sounded.
He also remembers seeing the search lights in the sky looking for german planes.
He had to carry his gas mask around in a box with him wherever he went.
He can remember the propaganda such as Lord Haw Haw on the radio.
He remembers the rationing and not having any bananas.
He said "We were very lucky because Leeds wasn't bombed"
His cousin worked in a munition factory making tanks.
His clearest memory is having big street parties to celebrate the end of the war where everybody put all the rations together to share. They had banners up in the street and it was a very happy occasion.
My Nan was not even 1 when the war started she still has some memories from nearer the end of the war.
She remembers that rationing was a big thing.
She had an all in one Mickey Mouse suit for a gas mask.
People were very frightened and helped each other out.
She can remember her step-dad giving her all his sweet coupons lasting a month and her going to the shop to get them.
My Grandad was a young boy during the war too.
He was evacuated to Caister near Grimbsy from Hunslet because a clothing factory that made uniforms for the army was bombed and because it was targeted by German's to destroy the engineering works.
He went into the cellar instead of a shelter.
He remembers going on a train and then on a bus where he arrived in a small village where the people who looked after him worked on a farm and had pigs and chickens in the back garden.
He had a mickey mouse gas mask.
