I was born in 1938 and my first sister in 1941. My mother taught me how to bolt the door when whe had to go to the shops during the evening and I had to stay to watch my sister. I was told not to open the door to anyone except her. She would put her hand through the letter box and I would know her hand and her wedding ring.
When the sirens used to sound we had to go into the air raid shelters just opposite our house. The children used to have the bunks while the mam's used to take their knitting and reading etc.
We stayed with an aunt in Bishop Auckland for a couple of years until the war ended then returned to West Hartlepool. My dad never spoke of the war and I am now trying to find out where he was through the historial documents of the army.
