This is Lindsay Worgan from Southmoor School (sunderland) entering Freda Duncan's story on to the website and they fully understand the websites terms and conditions of use :
When the war started i was only in my teens, it wasn't a very nice atmosphere when you stept out to wlak into the streets as there was people without homes and very little to eat. once there had been a bombing people where lying in the streets crying because there loved ones had been lost.
During the war the food wasn't like it is today it was more rashins , it was dried eggs and dried milk it was awful to eat. There was a bomb shelter at the bottom of my street so when a bomb was dropped me, my mum and my dad and dog lady would run to the bottom of the street for safety in the shelter . the health was ok back in the war times as you could visit the doctors anytime you wanted but there was no pain relife drugs like their is today.
When the war began I lived in Sunderland just over the green bridge next to the shipyards and that was where most of the bombs where dropped so i was really scared. Some days school was still on during the war but i didn't go to school very often as i liked to stay home and look after my mum as she was blind. When i did go to school i didn't have any boyfriends as i think they where a rela distration from my school work.
During the war fashionable clothes wasn't an issue like it is today, people weren't bothered what they looked like whereas today people always want to have the new labels.
In the time that the war was on i didnt get exacuated as i wanted to stop home and look after my mam. my brother in law was 21 at the time and went to fight in the war and also my stepsister worked as a nurse for injured soilders.
When i did go to school i got the bus and it was only 1p. In pe we did not have equiptment like children do today we never had the javelin or cones and stuff to play rounders.
I could not read or write so if i needed forms or anything filling in i would ask my stepsister to help me.
During my time in the war everyone had a gas mask although they where horrid things we got them for free.
In our house to keep us warm we had a coal fire . When the nhs was invented it did not make a difference to me.
We had no tv to keep us occupied but we did have a radio and we would listen to the news 24/7 to see what was going on outside of the shelter. There was no chocolate and no crime either i could go to the shelter or go anywhere and leave my door unlocked and i would come back with the same stuff in my house.
The ombs mainly came over here on a night and we would dash to the shelter as quick as lightening although it was abit of a struggle to get my dog lady out of the house as she was terrified of bombs.
Thankfully none of my family was lost during the war and i like the living conditions now than what they were like during the war and the day the war ended felt like the best day of my like as i was really happy.
