I was 12 when the war started, the school in Middlesbrough was closed and we were all evacuated to Scarborough. We were sent to a hotel, all aged between 10 and 12 with 2 school teachers. The hotel owner had no experience of looking after so many children and it was the first time most of us had been away from home. We had to suddenly become self-sufficient, looking after ourselves as well as taking part in the running of the hotel, including serving food. A culture shock for those of us used to being looked after by our mothers!
When it came to spring time the hotel owners wanted us to leave, so there would be room for their holiday guests — they didn’t seem to realise there was a war on!
