This story has been submitted to the People's War website by Andrew Livesey of the Lancshomeguard on behalf of Mrs Petherbridge and added to the site with her permission.

My husband would have been about 9 years old, he would collect as much shrapnel as he could after any air raid and take it to school to compare who had the best bit!, then the council came to collect it.
He also remembers he had to change schools as the school he was in had to be converted to a mortuary.
