I was staying with me grandfather in 39 Standen Road, Southfields, Wandsworth. My father was in the navy. We were in the only house that still had gas. The rest had electric. It was 1949.
We was in the Anderson Shelter. You鈥檇 pull a rose bush to one side and go down the shelter. Me grandfather made it. It was so damp down there. I think we put a duckboard down there. I got whooping cough, diphtheria and measles, chicken pox and things, you know.
You felt rough under ground. But you have to fight it or you give in. I has me mother鈥檚 love and me family. Everyone mucked in.
