My brother, Austin Burke, always known as Terry was serving in the Palestine Police before the war. He was seconded to the RNVR and was a Lieutenant on a ship patrolling the North African Coast, He was mainly concerned with communications and his work involved frequent telephone calls to Cairo. The operator he spoke to most frequently was an ATS girl called Ann Todd who had an exceptionally pleasant speaking voice. He made a date to meet her the next time he got leave to go to Cairo. Their relationship progressed quite rapidly and they were married on 1st December 1943. Their marriage lasted almost 52 years until my brother died in 1995. His widow lives in Switzerland near her younger son. There are two surviving children and five grandchildren.
