My brother and I were born in Singapore, where my father was stationed as a Sergeant with the Royal Air Force (he was ground crew). In 1942 we were on the second to last ship to leave Singapore as the Japanese were invading. Because my mother had died when we were born, my father was able to leave Singapore with us. The journey back to England took us six months because we spent a long time having to avoid submarines.
