In 1941 I was 17 and a half and I joined the Volunteer Aircrew and the RAF. When I finished training as a wireless navigator - I didn't want to be a pilot because there were plenty already!!

I was posted in Scotland as part of the convoy escorts bringing food into Britain. My squadron was then posted to the Far East. We landed at Karachi, and then we went on to Ceylon (Sri Lanka). We hunted submarines in the Indian Ocean.

In 1944 I was transferred on to American Liberator Bombers doing special operations, dropping agents behind enemy lines.

VJ Day I came home. I was transferred onto York Transports and was a part of the Berlin Airlift. I flew nearly 300 times - 3 lifts a day. I was finally de-mobbed in 1950,

In the meantime in 1946 I got married. Our first son was born while I was on the Berlin Airlift.
