Kent seemed to have its fair share of air raids and it was known to have as much as 15 raids in a night. My story is about having managed to scramble into the shelter and the German Air Force were really giving us hell and I became a victim of a raid over Kent. It rained literally with shrapnel, so much so that a very large piece hit our shelter and yours truly had his head leaning against the side that it jarred the optic nerve in my right eye and distorted my teeth. I spent the rest of the war and beyond visiting every week at Moorfields Hospital in London, having several operations to try to get my eye back to normal. In between visits to the Eye Hospital were taken by visiting a dental practice to straighten out my teeth. Fortunately my teeth were put straight, but the eye was damaged too much. So from the age of six and a half I have had to wear glasses. The only thing funny about that night was the fact that my Mother decided to climb out of the shelter and did a jig round the shelter shaking her fists into the air and shouting * ** which didn't do any good, but she felt better for it.
