When I was 5 my father volunteered to serve in the Merchant Navy because in his tens he had run away and served as a junior steward until he was 16.I was an only child and had not started school because the air raids were so frequent. I did not go to school at all until I was 6.
We were rationed,of course, but before my father left he had made contact with some Scots Guards who were billeted in the next street and they proceeded to look after my mother, my great aunt Alice and myself by giving us extra supplies of tea and sugar and other things which helped my mother very much. They were very kind and being very small they appeard to be absolutely huge. We used to invite them over for tea and once they came round at Christmas and sang songs and gave me presents.
At the beginning of the blitz my father insisted that we go away to some relations in Carmarthen, S Wales where an aunt by marriage came from.
