My Nan used to keep a button in her sewing basket, she said it was special to her - I asked her why? She told me how her family lived in the centre of London during the 2nd World War. As children her and her sister were in great danger and so reluctantly their parents decided they were to be evacuated. My Nan recalled how her and her sister stood on the platform with hundreds of other children waiting for the trains. Their parents had told them to stay together at all costs and not to get parted and they would see them soon. As they waited a train pulled in, she recalled seeing tired looking men on board many half naked wrapped in red cross blankets. They were those who returned from Dunkirk. As a soldier got off the train he pulled off what was left of his uniform a button. This was the button that she had kept in the box. It obviously ment something special to her. My Nan unfortunately died last year (2002) of cancer. Her button is still safe x
