Living in Coombe Road, my newspaper round took me up past Upper Sydenham railway station. At a big house opposite the station, I got blown off my bike from the blast from a V2 rocket that landed somewhere nearby. Shaken up, but not injured, I got back on my bike and completed my round day dreaming about being in the newspapers next day. "Paper boy continues his round despite enemy action" was my favourite headline.
Coming from West Hill I crossed down through Wells Park, and then realised the V2 had landed near the barrage balloon site. Skirting the rescue crews I returned home.
"Where have you been?" was my mother's greeting. "Your father," (he was a Police Sergeant,) "is helping with the digging out up at the barrage balloon site. You'll have to get your own breakfast. I'm going up to make tea for the Rescue Crews." She was gone!
I told Twonkle the cat, who was as interested as my mum. I later listened to what Dad and Mum had done up at the site. Alas no name in the papers. Where our house once was, there is now a Peter's Lane.... I still daydream.
