The 1st September 1939. My sister and I went to our school along with a lot of others to board a bus with our labels attached, each of us carrying a carrier bag which had in it, a packet of cream crackers, tin of corned beef and a tin of evapourated milk to give to whoever took us in. No road signs or place names to be seen on the way - we ended up at a village school in Alford and lined up in twos where people came along and chose who they wanted. My sister and I were the last and hadn't been chosen. A lady came and took us to a house where a boy and girl of 14 and 12 were waiting. The lady of the house came home, after helping at the school and was not pleased as she had requested two boys! However, we were made very welcome.I was 11 and my sister was 9. We were very excited because we had never been away before and we settled down very well. We were well looked after and got on well with everyone. The name and address where we were sent was Mrs Wright and her sergeant Major husband of 5 Carr Lane, Alford, Lincolnshire. The daughters name was Doreen and the boy was attending grammer school. I would love to know if there is anybody who remembers those times from Alford who would like to get in touch with me. My sister and i were Irene and Marjorie Woolfe. Whilst we were at the village school, the murder of Mona Tinsley took place which affected us all badly. The male teacher at the village school was a Mr Vickers
