Marlow is a quiet place, apart from traffic noise,I was born and raised there from 1934 on and still retain vivid memories of the 39-45 war years. I lived in Berwick RD,moved there in 1939 from Quoiting Sq the centre area of Marlow, little did we know what was coming. First it was the evacuees, a family of four from London, they had the upstairs rooms, and became an extended part of the family, that was 1940.I remember well 1941 seeing the glow of London burning from the blitz and then the dog fights in the skies during the summer days, then the bombs!! one night several fell along the road, one landing in the garden next door, did not explode , another demolished a bungalow opposite, injuries yes but no deaths thank goodness, we heard the whistle and then every thing shook!!soot came down the chimney there was black dust everywhere, the ARP came and we all had to leave home to stay in the Marlow girls school hall until all was safe. This was repeated at a later date, we were told that the bombs were meant for Booker Airdrome-then it was a dispersal drome and ACK ACK station. After this all the houses in the road had breeze block walls(baffle walls)built infront of the down stairs windows and used by us children to climb up and play on.We lived almost peacfully from 1943-45 except for the V1 or Doodle bug , several came over and landed in fields, but one fell on a house near Marlow Common-I was with the Boy Scouts (cub pack)enjoying a picnic on the common, we later heard that one of our pack, who later became a school friend, was at the house and was injured while rescuing his Grand Parents from the damaged building, eventually being awarded the Scouts V.C. for his courage.these are just a few of the memories of the war years, Im sure many people have many more to tell, all painting a wartime picture as seen through a childs eyes.
