My mother, Kay Wye, who lived and worked in the GPO telephone exchange in Guildford during the war, often relates a story about a colleague of hers who was married just before the war started.
The new bride was somewhat "green" about housekeeping and shopping for food and, on one classic occasion, asked her grocer to supply a pound of pepper. After some discussion, a pound of pepper was duly supplied, much to everyone's amusement.
The bride had the last laugh, however, as she had pepper throughout the war years!
(As a footnote - the same new bride also asked her butcher for a leg of beef. It is not known if this was supplied!)
