At the beginning of the War I was 18 yearsof age and had already joined the British Red Cross Society and taken First Aid and Home Nursing Certtificates. I joined the Civll Nursing Reserve and worked in three different hospitals.
Before D Day, this hospital was cleared of nearly all the patients and preparations were made for it to be used as a base hospital for the expected wounded. They were to be transferred directly from the War front by plane to this hospital.. They were not to be told where they were and would only stay for a short while and then be transferred elsewhere. The hospital then to be cleaned and ready for the next convoy.
All new equipment was provided and the corridors were lined with stretchers in preparation for the expected convoys.. Medical staff were increased, coming from the main London Hospitals.
The MIRACLE was that there was nothing like the amount of casualties that were expected and after six weeks the hospital reverted to its original use. There were more staff than patients..
