I joined up in the South African army in March 1943. What was the state of the WW2 at that stage?
I was a 17year old school boy but by joining the Reserve forces it released another man in arms to "go North". There was danger of insurgency in SA from the 'Ossewa Brandwag" who were sympathetic to the Nazis.

Message 1 - South African entry

Len -
the minute we heard that you had joined up - we knew we just had to win - Strangely it was about that time that we were 'on the way' to
winning - Rommel had given the Americans their first taste of battle - he then tried it on with the 8th Army at Medenine - he was clobbered and fired - we had the victory at El Hamma and circumvented the Mareth Line in Southern Tunisa and were well placed to finish off the North African campaign with the Battle of Medjez el Bab leading to Tunis and cap Bon by the may '43. The air forces were finally sinking U.Boats and more supplies were getting through to the U.K. from across the Atlantic - the Invasion of Sicily was only four months ahead in the july -Italy by September... so it was all go to the finish !
We were sure glad you joined at that time... made all the difference - just kidding !
