Staffs County Council libraries, on behalf of the author, have submitted this story. The author fully understands the rules and regulations of the People's War website.

When the war started, I was five years of age. I remember the Anderson shelters. Every time an aeroplane came over, everyone shouted "Come on, Come on, get in!" I remember clinging to my mum, very frightened.
One of my best memories, though, was on one lovely hot summer's day - we had been to Longton Park for a picnic with jam sandwiches and a bottle of water. As we were coming from the park we could see that our street was filled with women and children all waving flags and shouting "We've won!! We've won!!" I remember racing home and giving my mum a big hug!
