On or about the 10th May 1941, a milk train was de-railed by a bomb on the railway which ran alongside Ducane Road at a point approximately opposite Wormwood Scrubs prison.
All day there was a constant stream of children and adults carrying jugs, buckets, saucepans whatever was availiable to be filled with milk from the train, while man stood on top of the container syphoning the milk out.
That day, many rice puddings were made and children had the luxury of drinking unlimited milk.
When the milk had turned sour (which was on the next day for there were no 'fridges' for ordinary people in those days) one lady made cottage cheese by straining the milk through a muslin bag tied onto her washing line - another luxury and a supplement to the meagre cheese ration.
This is a lingering memory of an exciting day.
