When the war was on, members of my family were staying with my sister, her husband and their baby.
I was asleep one night. My mother told me to wake up. I said, 鈥淚 can鈥檛 get out of bed because there are hot coals on the floor,鈥 she replied 鈥淵ou are downstairs. We have been bombed. A land-mine has dropped in the next road.鈥
My sister was on nightshift at an ammunition factory in Kirby. Her husband had not been
able to get home. He was a bus driver. The roof was off, all the windows were blown out. Soot was everywhere (even in the tap water). I don鈥檛 know what the family did, but I went to work the next day.
I worked in a caf茅 shop in Litherland There was a bath in the shop. Some of the caf茅鈥檚 customers even wanted to house me. (the bombing was to come later). I went home that night (the night after the incident at my sister鈥檚 home). My cousin said we could stay with them. So we left Old Swan to walk to Everton. I don鈥檛 know what else we took with us, but my mother had a bird in a cage.
When we were half way there we managed to get a taxi. On arrival at my cousin鈥檚 street we discovered her house had been hit by a blast. So, we did not go in the house.
By that time it was beginning to get light. A siren went off and a warden told us to lie on the ground.
We then went to another Auntie鈥檚, but we were too late. Her house was full up.
By then we were in Breck Road, at a garage waiting for a cab. A Good Samaritan lady gave us a lift to a Salvation Army hall in Old Swan. They were caring for the homeless.
