I've had to tell this tale many times for my grandson so I think I've got it off pat!
We lived in a typical North London House - our family (all 6 of us) lived downstairs and an old lady upstairs. My father built our Anderson shelter which we all shared. The planes used to come up the Thames so we'd hear them quite early.
One time, the air raid siren went off and we all galloped towards the shelter. Well the old girl got there first and we heard a terrible scream.
What we'd forgotten to tell her was that I and my younger brother kept our toads and frogs in a box on one of the shelter's bunks! To this day, we don't know if it was the old girl who screamed in shock or the toads!
