This story is written by Sadia MAjid on behalf of Jill Birmingham regarding her farthers lucky escape during the war. This was written by permission of the author.
My Father was in the RAF police in Burma. One day he and an officer were escorting a spy back to Head Quarters to be questioned.
They managed to hitch a lift in a lorry load of soldiers and well into the jungle they stopped in a clearing. My father, the officer and the spy got out. I can only presume that one of them wanted to go to the loo.
Unbeknown to them the Japanese used to station a soldier high up in the trees to plot where the allied soldiers were going.
The Japanese fired a shell straight into the lorry killing everyone instantly. He obviously realised he could not kill the other three individually so he fired a shell over their heads. The officer was very badly wounded in the head, the spy started to run away and I remember very clearly saying 'Daddy what did you do' He said he wanted to shoot him in the leg to stop him but the kick of the gun meant he was shot in the back. My father dragged the officer into the jungle where the poor guy died shortly afterwards.
My poor Dad was badly wounded and wandered into the jungle washing his wounds in filthy pools which gave him an infection until the day he died. He was in the jungle alone for 3 days. Luckily it was not his time to die. He heard English voices and was found by a forward party of scottish soldiers. Again I said 'what did you do daddy' He said with deep feeling 'I fainted' On reflection I think I would have done so as well.
