My brother Jim and myself were talking small talk recently and we remembered Jim's war service with the Royal Signals Regiment. He remembered some memorable times, amongst them one that made us laugh.
He had just crossed the Channel going to the Normandy landing and:
"I was stood near the rails on a Liberty ship which was rolling madly. I was wearing full pack - rifle, water bottle etc, all of which weighted a ton. An American sailor said to me " When I get you over the side onto the net climb down slowly to my buddy who will look after you and when he shouts 'Jump', you jump as fast as you can."
There was a 10 foot swell and he suddenly shouted 'JUMP'. I was only 19 and I jumped and landed on the deck of the landing ship! That's why I'm sitting here now talking to you today. My brother Jim is 83 from Doncaster and I am his brother Tom - 76 years old.
