I remember in 1940, when I was five years old there was a raffle at Congleton CP School for half a dozen eggs, which was a very special treat because everyone used powdered eggs. It was the first time I can remember seeing real eggs, and I was dying to take them home for my mum.
The whole school were assembled in a circle in the playground and the Headteacher drew out the lucky name. And it wasn’t mine!
I was devastated!
