I remember on the run up to D-Day I saw the American soldiers trasporting all their gear down the coast. There were tanks and jeeps and loads of other vehicles and equipment being moved down for the invasion.

I remember thinking that they all seemed very brave, they were all a long way from home. We all liked the Americans because they were always very generous with sweets, which they gave out to kids.

One other thing I remember is all the packing cases. They were huge wooden boxes used of transporting goods. When the Americans were finished with them the just burned them. There were a lot of local people who were very annoyed, because we could have used them!
