I was at the end of my shift at the 'Machine Products' munitions factory in Newport Road in Cardiff. The air raid siren started and someone said that they were bombing Grangetown, the area where my family and I lived on the other side of the city. I was so worried about my mother that I ran all the way home, even though air-raid wardens kept trying to force me into the shelters. It was a long way- I used to travel to work by tram- but luckily I was quite athletic.
Finally when I did arrive home, I discovered that my mother and sisters were already in the air raid shelter at the bottom of our garden. 鈥淲hat on earth are you doing here?鈥 said my mother in complete surprise.
