鈥淭his story was submitted to the People鈥檚 War site by a volunteer from Hoo on behalf of Mr Attoe and has been added to the site with his permission. Mr Attoe fully understands the site鈥檚 terms and conditions.鈥
Mr Attoe has many childhood memories at the time of the war and focused a lot on the evacuation at the start of World War II. This was just one of his many accounts which shared.
鈥淚 was only nine and was still at school when the war started. I was evacuated on the first day of the war which was a Sunday. From there I went by boat called Queen of the channel from Gravesend to Great Yarmouth where I would be kept safe as much as possible from the war. When we arrived, I and many others slept overnight in the town hall and then we were split up and taken to where we would stay. I stayed in a rectory where I lived with the Vicar. I went to school as I would normally back home and we shared the school with the local children. I would write letters to my mother to stay in touch and let her know I was ok. It was scary at the time as you couldn鈥檛 predict what would happen and also you could worry about your family. After three months I came home for Christmas as not much had happened in the way of attacks or threats.鈥
Mr Attoe has lots of memories of World War II, all of which are very interesting to hear. Many of them are stories which give lots of detail and open up new doors to what life was like being a child during the war.
