Innocent minds
Evelynn Mc laughlyn moved to london from Balana co Mayo during World War 2
Evelynn was a young teacher and teached children between the age of seven and eight.Evelynn was knew to the lifesyle of living in a city prone to air raids she was unhappy in london and only moved their because her sister also lived their and she wanted to be close to her as her sisters husband had joined the Royal Air force.
When Evelynn first arrived in london she was not living their long when she witnessed her first air raid she was asleep in her room when a siren could be heard her sister came in and explained to her the situation at hand Evelynn hated these air raids and missed her home in mayo.When Evelynn started teaching in london she was shocked in her first week in the school aAir raid siren was heard and she was not sure what to do she panicked and was about to run to find another teacher for help but before she left she noticed the children where calm they had taken their safety positions under their desks and where prepared for the raid the room shook violently when bombs where dropped near the school Evelynn began rying and a small student patted her on the shoulder and told her its ok and that the silly Germans allways miss.Evelynn smiled another child said that his daddy flew the planes that fight the germans.After the raid stopped Evelynn appologiesed to the children for crying Evelynn asked the children what their mothers and fathers employment was nearly all the childrens fathers here where fighting the war agaisnt the germans some mothers where nures in the army while others where envovled in distrubuting rations Evelynn did not staay long in london her and her sister moved home to Myo after her sisters husband was killed in action Evelynn would return o teach in london later in her life in a time when life was much safer and war was million of miles away from student minds.I interveiwed Evelynn in october 2005 she now has three daughters and two son as well as grand children but she still remembers the innocent minds of the young wartime children she taught in london.
