I was a German Monitor at 大象传媒 Monitoring in Caversham. In the final days of the war the only German station that was still audable at the 大象传媒 Monitoring Service was a low powered radio at Flensburg which broadcast the German high command communique at 14.00(or later) every day, and there was a rota of monitors to cover all contingencies. I happened to be in the listening room shortly after 14.00 one day to be told that the person designated to monitor Flensburg had not shown up. So I clapped on my earphones and heard the tail end of what was apparently the official german surrender announcement.
I immediatley passed on the facts as I had heard them to the news service so they could be flashed to London, but for the details I had to replay the recording ( on a wax cylinder in those days) to discover who had made the announcemnt and exactly in what terms. Despite the inevitable delay in transcription the facts as I had reported them were confirmed and I felt mightly relieved.
