Britain was sending troops to Europe with the BEF, British Expeditionary Force but the war really started in May 1940 when the Germans carried out their Blitzkrieg on Belgium, France and the Netherlands. Falmouth didnâ€™t really experience Dunkirk as they did further up the channel
