My name is Ann Elizabeth Evans, and I鈥檓 88.
I鈥檓 from Llansantffraid- from Pen y Bont- originally. During the war, I was working in the big houses. At the beginning of the war, I worked for the Ormerods at Wrexham, at Pickhill Hall, and then they took me up to Scotland with them, after war was declared. That was just over the summer months. I worked for Marguerita Ormerod. The twin boys, and the girl, Maureen, had a nanny. They had their own maids there. We went up to stay with Mrs Ormerod鈥檚 mother in Scotland. They had a land army girl, and I used to help her now and again. I came back to Wrexham with them. Major Ormerod saw service in the First World War. He wasn鈥檛 in the Second World War, and the children were too young.
I went to Halston Hall next (near Whittington), that was to Mrs Eccles and Major Eccles.
And then I spent the rest of the war with Miss Helen Frances Hutton, at Stansty Cottage in Rhosddu. I was there until 1962. I was the housekeeper and lady鈥檚 companion. We were always ok for food with Miss Hutton. We didn鈥檛 have anyone billeted to us. I used to know Lady McAlpine too, she used to come for tea at Miss Hutton鈥檚. She came from Pen y Lan Hall, which was nearby.
