I was 7 when war broke out. We lived in a small terraced house fronting onto a court yard along with other housing. These terraces opened onto main streets and much of the working class dwellings were laid out in a similar manner.Dad, an ex seaman was a stevedore working loading and unloading ships` cargoes, my mother worked in a laundry.Park rd infant`s school for boys which I attended was about 3/4 of a mile away. One of the local picture houses up Beverley rd was showing " The Four Feathers" but had been closed along with other theatres before I had time to see it. I was quite miffed about this. I remember a first air raid alarm .It was a moon light night Ma and I dressed in a panic Dad stayed in bed. We dashed pell mell upto Park rd school where the basement had been designated as a shelter. My feet hurt terribly, in haste I`d got my boots on the wrong feet. The all clear sounded, it was a false alarm!
